The Illinois Coal Demonstration Program provides partial funding for the selected large-scale demonstration of advanced coal systems for utility and industrial use. Since its inception in 1981, Illinois has provided more than $140.8 million from the Coal and Energy Development Bond Fund for 29projects.
Southern Illinois Power Cooperative in Marion, Illinois reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by 74 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by 68 percent when it replaced three outdated and inefficient cyclone boilers with a new circulating fluidized bed boiler system. (Photo at left.)
